On Saturday, 6th June 2015, at the heart of the Cistercian Abbey of La Cambre, Brussels, accompanied by the Brussels Orchestral Ensemble and no less than 5 soloists, the European Union Choir will revisit two major sacred French and Italian works composed at the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries.

Brought together by their D Major tones and with the guarantee of an optimistic and joyful character, these works are the witness of the will of their composers to apprehend music in a dynamic process and also of their taste for ornamentation, virtuosity and contrast, thus producing two paragons of baroque music.

The first of these two gems, the polyphonic motet Te Deum of Marc-Antoine Charpentier, then music director of the church of Saint Louis in Paris, was composed around 1692 for 5 soloists and choir, accompanied by orchestral ensemble.

Composed in a joyful and war-like tone according to the composer, this piece praising God and, in a veiled manner, Louis XIV at the peak of his power, celebrates the victory of his soldiers over the League of Augsburg.

As witness, the use of instruments recalling royal prestige and military music: timpani and trumpets.

The second treasure of the concert, written at the beginning of 1700, Vivaldi's Gloria (RV 589) is the composer's most famous work of sacred music. Hymn for two sopranos, one contralto, a 4 part mixed choir and orchestra with continuo, it was composed when Vivaldi had just arrived at the Seminario Musicale dell'Ospedale della Pietà of Venice. Although it was composed for a mixed choir, the Pietà only hosting young girls, Vivaldi conceived his Gloria in such a way that it can be interpreted by an exclusively, all female choir.

Dirk De Moor, principal conductor and artistic director of the European Union Choir and Anthony Vigneron, choir director and organist of La Cambre, will guide us during this odyssey on a baroque journey from Paris to Venice.
